Homeland Security Technocracy Chaos and Confusion PDF Print E-mail

According to information contained in a leaked report obtained by The Washington Post the technocrats at the Department of Homeland Security hired some high paid consultants to "determine whether [DHS] was following federal contracting laws and internal policies."  The consultants had requested 72 contracts and the agency was only able to locate 33 contracts.  If this had been an audit on a Big Pharma or Financial Services company the government would swooped in and issued consent decrees and cried bloody murder.

The results of the high priced consulting engagement are as follows:

  • Documents found "often lacked basic documentation required under federal rules, such as evidence that the department negotiated the best prices for taxpayers."
  • "The inability to locate files and inconsistent file organization puts the government at risk in ensuring the contractor is fulfilling its contractual obligations and the government is meeting its contract administration responsibilities."

We can all sleep better at night knowing that the DHS is following the consultants' recommendations on fixing the situation. I don’t know about you, but I find it disturbing that this enormous technocracy is allowed to operate in such a manner with tax payers funding the chaos.  I find it equally disturbing when I hear about rampant corruption and payola associated with government contracts to support the war in Iraq.

Happy Thanksgiving!
